 L U K E  20  V27-38

Discussion about Resurrection

27 Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. 28 They posed this question: “Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.[a] 29 Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children. 30 So the second brother married the widow, but he also died. 31 Then the third brother married her. This continued with all seven of them, who died without children. 32 Finally, the woman also died. 33 So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her!”

34 Jesus replied, “Marriage is for people here on earth. 35 But in the age to come, those worthy of being raised from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage. 36 And they will never die again. In this respect they will be like angels. They are children of God and children of the resurrection.

37 “But now, as to whether the dead will be raised—even Moses proved this when he wrote about the burning bush. Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, he referred to the Lord[b] as ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[c] 38 So he is the God of the living, not the dead, for they are all alive to him

The Gospel for the coming Sunday is from Luke,

This passage opens with Sadducees going to Jesus to say  there is no resurrection. In the Jewish Church, there were Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Moses and  David who were all sceptics. This suggests the infidelity of some proportion, and we must be prepared to find infidels seeking to turn people away from the Scriptures. This infidelity is prevalent in some of the Churches, as false doctrine is preached

Which is likened to society.  The modern equal to Sadducees are still moving among us.  Advocates against them may be weak in opposition, but the strength of the Church  will prevail against the gates of hell.

We find secondly, a favorite weapon, of the sceptics is a supposed case. The Sadducees took a woman to Jesus and told of her marriage to  seven brothers all of whom died; whose wife would she be in heaven in the resurrection?  They were trying to trap the reply of Jesus.  There will always be people here who are desperate to prove the Bible is wrong,  Any division will be shown when the true situation is exposed.  What we do not know now, we will do so one day,

Thirdly, we find the true character of Christians in existence in the world to come. Jesus replied to His accusers that those who obtain that world will not marry or be given in marriage, for they will be like angels.

It is  made clear, that respecting in glory, their happiness is not carnal happiness but a spiritual one.  No births, sickness, disease, or infirmity shall be no more .

Heaven is something little mentioned in sermons  We see those who reject the

teaching of Jesus are in serious danger, they will not be in heaven.  The cares of family relationships shall no longer be on their minds.

We see lastly, the antiquity of belief in a resurrection. Jesus tells of Moses belief in it. Faith in a resurrection and in a life to come has been the universal belief in God’s people since the beginning of the world. All the Church patriarchs were looking forward to a better inheritance than they had here.

Let us place our own souls on this truth, that we shall rise again. We are not like animals that perish, and there will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust. The recollection of this truth will cheer us in the day of trial and comfort us in the hour of death,  The just will find a life to come with no change, but shall see God. We shall not always be in a grave, our God is a living God.  The unjust will regret they did not listen to the teaching of Jesus.

We Praise God’s Glorious Gospel, and the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ.
